The Architectural Foundation of Cincinnati (AFC) welcomes a new exhibit highlighting the work of local sculptor Mark Schlachter. The opening reception will be held at the AFC Gallery at 811 Race Street on Thursday, April 3 from 6-8PM. The exhibit will be on display in the gallery through May 29, 2014.
Teacher, photographer, librarian, theatre designer, broadcaster, write and sculptor all describe Cincinnati native Mark. Recent years have found Schlachter investing his time creating abstract metal sculpture. His work ranges from diminutive desk top pieces of steel and brass to 10-foot forms for outdoor display that demand attention from passersby. Of outdoor sculpture, Schlachter says, “The changing position of the sun, the shadows of passing clouds and the diffusion of a hazy summer day mean that no piece is ever seen the same way twice.”
In 2012 Schlachter designed two vibrant sculptural bike racks for ArtWorks; the bike racks are located in Hyde Park and Over-the-Rhine. Schlachter has also delivered one of his works, entitled slipped disc, for exhibition in the DAAP Library, to which he is a major donor. Additionally, his pieces are held in collections in four countries and a dozen states and can be found on public display in the tri-state region.
Since 1982, AFC has enriched the Greater Cincinnati community by connecting people with the places they live, learn, work and play. Through programming and educational outreach, AFC inspires public engagement in shaping the built environment. The AFC Gallery is open to the public Tuesday – Thursday 11am-3pm and by appointment.
