Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) welcomes applications for the position of Educational Programs Director. AARCH is the regional, nonprofit, historic preservation organization for the beautiful and diverse Adirondack region of New York State. Our mission is to further public understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of the Adirondacks’ unique architectural and cultural heritage, communities, and historic sites through educational programs, advocacy, technical assistance, and direct action. This legacy includes not only the nationally recognized “Great Camps” but also those structures that embody the whole range of human experience in the region, including homes and farmsteads, churches, commercial buildings, town halls, libraries, bridges, railroad buildings, lighthouses, and industrial sites.
AARCH seeks a highly dedicated professional with a demonstrated educational programing skillset to join our four-person team. Our Educational Programs Director will be responsible for developing, planning, and implementing an educational program that celebrates the diversity of architecture in the Adirondack region and beyond, and creating content within those programs that furthers our mission of enhancing public knowledge and encouraging better appreciation and stewardship.
The ideal Educational Programs Director will be:
- An individual with an understanding of and appreciation for Adirondack architectural history and an experienced professional with demonstrated skills in developing and implementing public education programing, especially in the fields of architecture, historic preservation, or history.
- A highly creative, articulate individual who is able to maintain our current program of successful tours, lectures, workshops, and events, and create new content and platforms that will attract a more diverse audience to our organization and mission. The ideal candidate will have excellent writing, research, communication, and social media skills.
- A highly collaborative and cooperative individual who is able to work as an intrinsic member of a four-person team to achieve organizational goals.
- An individual with a demonstrated ability to plan and implement multiple, complex programs at any given time with great attention to detail.
- An individual with a graduate degree in historic preservation, museum studies, public history, education, or a closely related field.
Applicants with some other dynamic combination of education, training, experience, and personal qualities will also be considered on an individual basis.
The responsibilities of the Educational Programs Director include:
- Developing, planning, and implementing a creative, dynamic annual educational program by working collaboratively with the Executive Director, Deputy Director, and Preservation Services Director. This program will typically include thirty-five day-long outings highlighting a wide variety of historic places and communities throughout the region, as well as five to ten other annual organizational events. Additional events also include educational opportunities related to our advocacy efforts that support historic preservation work within the region.
- Being willing and able to travel to all areas of the Adirondacks and beyond, both in the planning and implementation phases of programming. The Educational Programs Director will be responsible for exploring new educational opportunities throughout the region, including identifying areas we have yet to visit; areas that might benefit from preservation advocacy; sites that are in danger of demolition, etc.
- Planning and executing the annual educational program central to our mission, including coordinating with partnering organizations, historians, and local guides; managing the program schedule, including itineraries, costs, and day-of logistics; producing educational pamphlets for participants; and drafting press releases and other promotional materials for each event. The Educational Programs Director is also responsible for attending the planned tours and events.
- Organizing and implementing AARCH’s annual public lecture series, including scheduling, logistics, and occasionally participating as a presenter, as well as planning and implementing periodic workshops and conferences.
- Providing content for AARCH’s arts-in-education programs in several regional public schools, and developing other educational programs, especially for children and families, to help AARCH reach new audiences.
- Maintaining a respectful and comfortable demeanor as a representative for AARCH, and being comfortable with public speaking. Duties include regularly speaking in front of people during tours as well as at regional organization gatherings. The ability to quickly solve problems, be flexible, while maintaining a sense of humor throughout is also a plus.
- Developing and providing content for AARCH’s website, biannual Newsletter, blog posts, and AARCH’s social media vehicles.
- Providing occasional assistance to individuals, organizations, municipalities, and businesses to further historic preservation projects, and occasionally undertaking a fee for service work, such as National Register nominations.
- Assisting with other projects, as needed.
Additional Position Details:
Applicants should be aware that extensive travel and occasional overtime is required during the very busy summer months, which typically extend from June 1 to October 1. A vehicle and valid driver’s license is required.
