Under the direction of the Management Board, the Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and operation of San Francisco City Guides (SFCG) and its volunteers. S/he oversees all operations, policies, programs, and activities of the organization and is responsible for ensuring that they are consistent with the strategic plan. The Executive Director builds on existing effective partnerships with key allies and stakeholders and works to develop new partnerships that support SFCG in achieving its mission. S/he ensures ongoing fundraising success and works to increase SFCG’s recognition and relevance in the San Francisco community.

San Francisco City Guides is a program of the San Francisco Public Library and fiscally sponsored by the San Francisco Parks Alliance (SFPA). Since 1978, SFCG has been conducting free walking tours to residents and visitors that spotlight San Francisco history, architecture, legend, and lore. ● Participate with the Management Board and other stakeholders to develop and regularly update the organization’s strategic plan; assume primary responsibility for the implementation of the strategic plan
● Develop and implement policies around programmatic, organizational, and financial goals
● Identify and assess internal and external events and issues that affect the organization and provide relevant professional advice to the Management Board.
● Act as a spokesperson for the organization to the public, the media, and industry organizations and forums; coordinate messaging with Management Board Chair, as needed
● Represent the organization at community activities, as a public speaker, in panel discussions and other events, in order to enhance the organization’s visibility, public profile and brand reputation
● Conduct official correspondence on behalf of SFCG, consulting with the Management Board as appropriate
● Build and nurture strong, strategic long-term partnerships with key external stakeholders, including government agencies, community leaders, the local business community, industry organizations, and partners
● Foster a positive and supportive climate that attracts, cultivates, and motivates diverse, high-quality staff and active volunteers
● Ensure effective training, enrichment activities, and support for more than 300+ volunteers
● Maintain hands-on involvement in day-to-day operations and direct the activities of the Program Manager
● Promote active participation of volunteers beyond their basic duties of leading walks; encourage and support them to apply their professional or other skills to assist SFCG in meeting its organizational needs through participation in committees or as individual contributors
● Oversee, manage, and direct the activities of SFCG’s all-volunteer committees, which act as the effective operational departments of the organization; maintain interaction with committee chairs and work closely on the formulation and implementation of action plans
● Attend or send a staff representative to all committee meetings, as deemed necessary
● Ensure that SFCG staff job descriptions are developed and updated to reflect changing organizational needs and strategies; coach and evaluate staff performance on a regular basis, and in conjunction with SFPA, ensure that sound human resources practices are in place and implemented.
● Assume responsibility for ensuring that volunteers adhere to the SFCG Code of Conduct and other processes, procedures, and requirements;
● Provide regular updates on operations, issues, activities, and concerns to the Management Board in the form of written reports or presentations at Management Board meetings, and maintain close and regular interaction with the Management Board officers
● Work with the Treasurer to prepare an annual budget and ensure that the organization operates within budget guidelines by developing and maintaining sound financial practices
● Ensure all operations with regard to financial management is conducted in a transparent manner following the procedures set forth by the SFPA and in compliance with SFCG guidelines.
● Ensure adequate funds are available for SFCG to carry out its mission
● Assume responsibility for the annual fundraising needs of SFCG
● In coordination with the Management Board, SFCG staff, a contracted grant writer, and/or SFPA, establish and implement a broad-based fundraising plan, which will include identifying and establishing ongoing fundraising goals with periodic updates provided to the Management Board throughout the fiscal year
● Foster relationships with current sponsors and donors to increase levels of giving and establish new funding sources, including new sponsors and partners
● Function as the main point of contact with SFPA
● With the support of Management Board members, the Marketing Committee, and/or other Management Board-approved contracted personnel, deepen and refine all aspects of external communications, including use of the website, social media, traditional marketing, media and external relations, always with the goal of creating a stronger brand and increased visibility
● Develop and maintain effective working relationships and collaborative arrangements with key stakeholders and outside organizations, including community groups, funders, local businesses, corporations, media vendors, and the SF Board of Supervisors to help achieve the goals of the organization
● Maintain a current knowledge base of significant developments and trends in the urban walking tour industry and communicate key developments to the Management Board
● Market SFCG’s’ mission, tours, and activities to the internal organization, external agencies, businesses, community groups, local politicians, and the general public with support of the Marketing Committee, SFCG staff, Management Board-approved independent contractors, and/or the Management Board
● Communicate regularly and effectively to volunteers through relevant channels, including email, memos, phone conversations, speaking at member events, and writing a regular column in Guidelines, the organization’s monthly newsletter
● Proven leadership and interpersonal skills, strong ability to coach and develop volunteer talent, understand, and apply human resources best practices to both volunteer and paid workforces
● At least five (5) years holding positions of progressive responsibility in leadership and management in a non-profit voluntary sector organization, with demonstrated success in leading a non-profit and its stakeholders through periods of change and growth
● Excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills; strength in multitasking and the ability to prioritize and delegate effectively
● Self-starter with a positive attitude and initiative in developing action plans and resolving problems as they occur
● Ability to successfully engage and collaborate with individuals from a wide range of diverse cultural, professional, and other backgrounds
● Strong marketing, public relations, and branding skills
● Experience in planning large events; willingness to embrace any task (hands-on) no matter how small, to guarantee the success of an event or program
● Knowledge of and enthusiasm for the mission of the organization, including San Francisco’s history, cultural diversity, current community challenges, and potential opportunities relating to the mission of the organization
● Embraces technology, has basic management and troubleshooting skills of computer systems, and is proficient in MS Office Suite and the strategic and operational use of social media
● Knowledge of and experience with fundraising and marketing strategies
● Demonstrated ability to identify and secure new sources of funding
● Experience and comfort with managing a $300,000+ organizational budget
● Strong written and verbal communication skills with multiple diverse audiences
● Willing and able to work weekends and evenings as needed
