POSITION SUMMARY

The Bay Area Discovery Museum (BADM) houses the world’s first early childhood Fab Lab, a model to be scaled and replicated internationally. The Fab Lab Specialist oversees all aspects of the daily operation and use of BADM’s Fab Lab, including ordering, prep, organizing, and technical support and contributes to conversations on long-term vision and strategy. Additionally, the Fab Lab Specialist is responsible for designing and fabricating unique projects using digital and hand tools, collaborating with other departments on site to develop training and curriculum, and maintaining all Fab Lab equipment. Projects will be fabricated using any and all available technology, machinery, and media as a means for educating and inspiring visitors and staff. Projects and creations will serve to inspire curriculum and program development. The Fab Lab Specialist will regularly facilitate programming, including regularly scheduled weekends, for the public, for camps, and for school groups.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designs and fabricates unique and innovative projects for public viewing and inspiration
  • Prototypes early childhood program ideas, both digital and analog
  • Assists in program facilitation, including public programs, school programs, staff training, and camps
  • Assists in all aspects of the daily operation and use of the BADM’s Fab Lab
  • Maintains Fab Lab equipment including, but not limited to, laser cutters, 3D printers, Handibot (CNC) and vinyl cutters
  • Utilizes design software to create computer drawings using software including, but not limited to, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and AutoCAD
  • Provides technical support for Fab Lab hardware and software
  • Operates machines during events and programming as needed
  • Interacts with and explains process to visitors while working on projects
  • Orders and organizes supplies for programming and production
  • Researches other Fab Labs and participates in communities of practice around making and digital fabrication
  • Fulfills orders for special events as needed
  • Designs and fabricates projects for the Fab Lab and the Museum as needed
  • Develops and implements a training program to get staff up to speed on operating machines
  • Ensures safe use of machines amongst staff and visitors
  • Supports Fab Lab team in setting up for programs
  • Assembles new equipment as needed
  • Provides excellent customer service while maintaining a safe, friendly, and orderly environment
  • Maintains standards for inter-departmental communication
  • Collaborates with other departments to aid in curriculum development

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficiency in digital design software Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and CAD required; Familiarity with Rhino, Solidworks, or Inventor preferred
  • Working knowledge of fabrication equipment such as a laser cutter, vinyl cutter, Handibot (CNC), and 3D printer
  • Architecture, design, engineering or related field experience preferred
  • Basic computer programming and coding knowledge
  • Interest in prototyping and making
  • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service experience required
  • Teaching experience preferred
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and troubleshoot in a fast paced work environment
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Bilingual in Spanish or Cantonese preferred
