Volunteer Coordinator

Boston By Foot

Boston By Foot seeks a Volunteer Coordinator to organize the activities of our 200+ volunteer tour guides and to build structures and activities to help our volunteers be their best. Reports to the Executive Director. This is a part-time (25-30 hrs/wk) position with flexible scheduling, though occasional evening and weekend work is required.

Duties include:

·      Nurture relationships with Boston By Foot’s 200 volunteers coordinating their activities and responding to ongoing needs

·      Serve as primary point of contact for volunteers and volunteer committees

·      Assist in coordinating events such as annual volunteer training program, new volunteer graduation and volunteer recognition events

·      Oversee BBF’s regular tour calendar and ensure there is volunteer coverage on all tours

·      Play a major role in implementing Boston By Foot’s accessibility, diversity and inclusion initiatives among the volunteer corps

·      Work with volunteers to plan, organize and evaluate tours and programs

·      In partnership with the Executive Director, recruit and interview incoming volunteers

·      Develop and coordinate volunteer workshops and training sessions

·      Foster relationships with programming partners

·      Engage in special projects, initiatives and other duties to support the organization


Qualifications and required skills

A successful candidate should:

·      Have exceptional customer service skills

·      Be a self-starter and be able to manage multiple projects in a small, but fast-paced office

·      Have a friendly, patient disposition and the ability to work with a variety of personality types

·      Have excellent written and verbal communication skills

·      Be flexible and have a creative approach to problem solving

·      Have experience working with volunteers

·      Have BA or BS and 2-3 years experience in nonprofits, museums, tourism or other related field

·      Knowledge of and experience in public history interpretation and program evaluation

·      Have a passion for history, architecture and preservation

·      Have strong computer skills; proficiency with Microsoft office and the ability to learn new programs easily
