AAO Webinar: Leveraging Local Networks

This resource includes a recording of the May 4, 2017 AAO Webinar with Samantha Weaver. Six nonprofits in Pittsburgh offer K-12 architectural education programs of one stripe or another, so they joined together to form the Architecture Learning Network (ALN) to help high school students navigate their options. What began with a shared calendar listing grew into a system of learning pathways and digital badges thanks to a grant from the Sprout Fund.

From Kid to Student to Architect: Connecting the Dots Along the Learning Pathway (Part 2) (2015 Design Matters Conference)

As part of the same-title session at the 2015 Design Matters Conference, Ed Orlowski, associate professor of architecture at Lawrence Technological University, shared a brief presentation about organizing college and graduate-level students to respond to real-world design challenges posed by local community groups. There is much in Orlowski's approach that echoes the work of traditional K-12 architectural organizations, but, of course, his Activist Architecture and Design Studio course at LTU deals with emerging designers in higher education.

Presentation - Model Making PLUS: Blending Technologies Old + New

As part of the 2014 A+DEN Symposium, Barry Kudrowicz (University of Minnesota, College of Design) provided an introductory workshop that started out by covering a number of best practices on conducting brainstorming and group problem solving sessions and then transitioned into a hands-on building session that asked participants to dream up opportunities for embedding technology into structures. The workshop combined traditional model-making materials with easy-to-use sensors and motors from littleBits. This presentation is a useful primer for educators interested in incorporating more technology into their K-12 architecture education lessons, or just looking for new activities and ice-breakers/bell-ringers to facilitate group interaction.
