Curatorial Assistant

Art Omi

Art Omi is seeking a Curatorial Assistant to join our team. Working under the supervision of the Senior Curator and Architecture Curator, this position assists with all aspects of gallery exhibitions and outdoor installations for the art and architecture programs, including research, studio visits, public programming, and development of interpretive materials. Excellent research and writing skills are essential as well as knowledge of emergent critical dialogues and experimental practices in the fields of contemporary art and architecture.

About Art Omi

Since its founding in 1992, Art Omi has supported international artists across disciplines, serving as a lab space that nurtures and commissions forward-thinking projects in nascent stages of development and catalyzes expanded contexts for significant works due for critical reappraisal. A non-profit arts organization in the Hudson Valley, Art Omi features a 120-acre Sculpture & Architecture Park with more than sixty works in a bucolic setting of rolling farmlands, wetlands, and wooded grounds, and residency programs for international artists, writers, translators, musicians, architects, and dancers. Art Omi is free to all, and our grounds are open from dawn to dusk every day. In 2008, Art Omi opened the Charles B. Benenson Visitors Center, the first public LEED-certified building in the county with a green roof and a 1,500-square foot gallery, where 3-4 exhibitions are presented each year.

Recent gallery exhibitions include solo shows with artists Allana Clarke, Raven Halfmoon, Portia Munson, Tschabalala Self, and Jeffrey Gibson. Recent architecture exhibitions include 5x5: Participatory Provocations and EXIT Architecture.

Major Areas of Responsibility

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Assistance in the planning, research, organization, and installation of 3-4 gallery exhibitions and 5-8 major outdoor installations each year;
Provides exhibition support, including bibliographic and checklist research, loan correspondence, public program planning, and publication research and production;
Writes didactic texts as well as materials for fundraising, digital platforms, and press and marketing materials, as requested.
Provides support for the production of newly commissioned works, and assess feasibility of proposed projects with a focus on problem solving with exhibitions team;
Provides tours to artists, donors, press, and other members of the public;
Other tasks as needed to support the work of the department.

Bachelor’s degree; 1-2 years curatorial experience in a museum or gallery, and experience in public programming preferred.
Demonstrated interest in contemporary art and architecture; keeps informed of current activities in the field through research, gallery and museum visits, studio visits, publications, etc.;
Superior research and writing skills;
Excellent organizational and time management skills and proactive about creating and implementing systems for work;
Attention to detail and professionalism in all work and written correspondence (both internal and external);
Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing priorities;
Computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.

Work Environment

This position is 40 hours per week, with an opportunity to conduct some work remotely.  Work takes place primarily indoors, encompassing typical professional office operations and equipment, with the exception of events, some of which take place outdoors in Art Omi’s Sculpture & Architecture Park. The candidate must be able to work some weekends and evenings onsite, or at Art Omi-related events. This position is within a fast-paced, energetic, environment with long stationary periods.

Schedule & Compensation

Full-time (hybrid), 40 hours per week including some weekends, evenings, and key events. Some remote work is possible.

Starting salary is $45,000-$55,000, dependent on experience.

Benefits package includes partial health insurance premium reimbursement, paid time off (including federal holidays and sick time), and access to 403(b) retirement account.
