Director of Public Programs

The Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS)

Director of Public Programs
The Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) is seeking a Director of Public Programs. The Director of Public Programs is responsible for the curation, creation, and execution of a range of in-person and virtual programs from Jane’s Walk NYC, to MAS’s key awards programs, MASterworks and the Brendan Gill Prize. The Director of Public Programs will oversee a robust set of purpose-driven programs that amplify and manifest the organization’s policy perspective, playing a central role in MAS’s advocacy strategy.

The Municipal Art Society of New York lifts up the voices of the people in the debates that shape New York’s built environment and leads the way toward a more livable city from sidewalk to skyline. MAS envisions a future in which all New Yorkers share in the richness of city life—where growth is balanced, character endures, and a resilient future is secured.

With more than 125 years of history, our advocacy efforts have led to the creation of the New York City Planning Commission, Public Design Commission, Landmarks Preservation Commission, and the Tribute in Light, as well as the preservation of Grand Central Terminal, the lights of Times Square, and the Garment District.

New York City is at a key moment of transition as the pandemic continues, leaving a city facing enormous health, social, and economic strains. The city also faces one of the most significant changes in governmental leadership in recent decades. MAS recognizes this moment as one of great importance as the city repositions itself for a more equitable future.

MAS public programs and events broaden, educate, and engage our audiences to elevate the MAS advocacy agenda and influence policy for a more livable city. The Director of Public Programs will play a central role in MAS’s strategies to strengthen a community of members and supporters by providing engaging programs about the city’s new and emerging needs.

In 2021 MAS produced 22 events with more than 3,000 attendees from New York City and around the world. Jane’s Walk NYC drew more than 70,000 participants, in self-guided and virtual formats. Our website provides a full picture of our current and upcoming work.

The impact of MAS programs and events is measured through attendance, quantitative and qualitative feedback received from MAS constituency, press garnered, revenue generated through ticket sales, memberships sold, and sponsorships. The Director of Public Programs will help deepen and enrich this impact through their expertise, leadership, and passion.

Lead the organization’s programs from concept through curation and coordination, supervise the work of the Program Associate and collaborate with internal and external partners and stakeholders to reach and grow the MAS audience. Support the marketing, communication, and promotion of programs in coordination with MAS communications staff and contractors. Manage annual Public Programs budget.

Proven ability to develop highly successful programs and events, including the ability to think strategically about audience development, program content and outreach.
Familiarity with urban issues and current events with the ability to connect them to MAS advocacy.
Strong interpersonal and communications skills with a proven ability to work collaboratively with partners — external and internal, stakeholders and vendors.
Able to manage staff, delegate effectively and ensure that performance standards are met while encouraging professional growth.
Able to produce events, including timeline and run-of-show management, budget management, contract negotiation, coordination with vendors, external partners, and talent, and briefing and supervising support staff.
Passion for exploring new means of connecting with existing and new audiences, including different formats and platforms, specially through virtual programming.
Strong research and organizational skills and keen attention to detail.
Strong writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills, with ability to speak and appeal to a broad range of stakeholders.
Able to create and manage efficient systems that ensure the ability to balance a multitude of simultaneous priorities and trouble-shoot event details from the planning phase to day-of.

Our staff includes planners, design experts, historians, civic leaders, community builders and advocates who love New York City. We work collaboratively across departments and with a wide variety of partners from across the boroughs. We hope you or someone you know can join us in our work!
